The Grebo live on the coast of Liberia, west of the Cavally River. They sculpt masks that incarnate the spirits of the invisible world that live in the forest. Produced by initiates of a very high level, the masks appeared during rituals reserved for them & at the time of celebrations when the whole population was able to see them. Mask usually display several pairs of eyes thought to represent ancestors and seers. Being geographically isolated, information on the Grebo is only now starting to be accumulated by scholars. Masks usually display several pairs of eyes thought to represent ancestors and seers. In the past, their masks were associated with warfare.
