Attributed to various Ethiopian tribal groups in the Omo River region, these shields are made of hippopotamus hide. The designs on the shield are created by placing the hide over a wood mould. Shields, in addition to being used in warfare and ceremonies, also served as prestige objects. This shield measures 16" in diameter and 6" in depth.
