Ibeji, or twin statues, from the Yoruba people in Nigeria. Twins are considered to be good luck. The Yoruba believe the twins share one soul between them. If one of the twins dies, the statues are made to become the abode for the departed. Through the intermediary of the ibeji statuette, the Yoruba mother will maintain a bond with her child by bathing, clothing and feeding the doll. This pair has recently been acquired from a collection that was established in the 1960's. They are a very fine quality with a lovely patina. 12 inches high.
