Seven Flute Collection -SOLD
Price: $0.00

A collection of seven flutes representing distinct visual styles from the Mossi people in Burkina Faso. Flutes are played to accompany the music of balafons and the rapid beat of drums during ceremonies and mask perfomances. They are played in groups of 5 to 7 or more men. Each flute is played in a set of notes with a complex but very repetitive tune. Because the languages in this area are tonal, flutes can imitate the tonal patterns of spoken phrases, as well those in songs.
The holes are burned with hot pokers through the projecting arms to the hollow center of the flute, and when the musician covers the holes he changes the pitch.
The flutes range in size from 5 1/8 inches to 13 3/4 inches; please contact us for detailed images of individual flutes.
